George Washington’s Birthday is a U.S. holiday celebrated on the third Monday of February in honor of the first President of the United States. It is also known as Presidents Day. This year Presidents Day falls on February 20. One fun fact about George Washington is that he loved ice cream. George Washington was reported to have spent $200 on ice cream in the summer of 1790. Back then, that was a small fortune! If you had to guess, what do you think George Washington’s favorite flavor of Blue Bunny ice cream would be?

George Washington isn’t the only politician with a love for ice cream. As it turns out, Abraham Lincoln had ice cream served at his 2nd inaugration. Harry S. Truman was also known for his fondness of ice cream. Truman had a poker circle that provided guests with pop and ice cream every month. Ice cream has been a popular treat for U.S. presidents for many years. It only makes sense that you celebrate Presidents Day with a scoop or two of your favorite flavor!

Groundhog Day is February 2nd and we are hoping Phil leaves his burrow! According to folklore, if it is cloudy on this day when a ground hog emerges from its burrow, it will leave the burrow, signifying that winter-like weather will soon end. If it is sunny, the groundhog will supposedly see its shadow and retreat back into its burrow and winter weather will continue for six more weeks. Six more weeks of winter!?

Phil is a groundhog that is a resident of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, where they hold the official festival for Groundhog Day. If Phil leaves his burrow that means spring is here sooner! You know what that means? Ice cream weather! Not that we don’t enjoy sweet treats in the colder months but there is something about sunshine and Blue Bunny ice cream.

Once you know your guest list, focus on the real fun: what snacks will you provide? Since guests will be coming over after dinner, maybe a dessert bar is in order. Better yet, an ice cream sundae bar with various flavors of ice cream and toppings galore! Sweet treats and celeb gossip are a winning combo, but Blue Bunny ice cream and friends takes home the award!

When you think of the winter holidays, what comes to mind? Snowmen and sledding, tinsel and lights, hot chocolate and pecan pie…What about candy canes? For many people, candy canes are a symbol of the season, and December 26 is the perfect day to celebrate them because it’s National Candy Cane Day!

Candy canes looked a little different in the beginning than they do today. They started as all-white, straight candy sticks and are said to have been used first as decorations for the Christmas trees of European-Christians in the 1600s. Some says that they were first referred to as candy “canes” around 1670 when a choirmaster in Germany bent the candy sticks into cane-like shapes to look like shepherds’ staffs. Stripes weren’t seen on candy canes until after 1900.

Today candy canes are available in all different sizes, colors and flavors and are a favorite treat around the holidays. In honor of National Candy Cane Day, take some miniature candy canes and use them to make a fun and tasty treat. Blue Bunny Frosty Reindeer uses Blue Bunny Vanilla Ice Cream Sandwiches, whipped topping, caramel candies, cinnamon red hots and miniature candy canes. Check out bluebunny.com to get started on your very own frosty reindeer treat!

The holidays are quickly approaching, and with them will come all the family, all the food, and all the presents. The holidays are definitely cause for excitement, but they are often also cause for increased stress. December is National Stress-Free Family Holiday Month. It’s easy to get wrapped up in all the preparations that have to happen in order to make holiday gatherings with family and friends absolutely perfect. The house needs to be cleaned and decorated, the gifts must be selected and wrapped, the menu has to be planned and the dishes prepared…etc. Take a minute to remember that these gatherings are really about spending time with those that you care about. None of your guests will remember whether the bows on the package were perfectly tied, or whether every table top was carefully decorated. What they will remember is the time spent together, visiting, laughing and sharing in the holiday spirit.

The closer we get to the holiday season, the more Poinsettias you’ll see. These beautiful red plants are native to Mexico, but were introduced to the United States more than 18– years ago by Joel Roberts Poinsett. Poinsett served as the first U.S. minister to Mexico from 1825 to 1829. During this time he found the plant growing on a Mexican hillside and sent samples back to the greenhouse at his home in South Carolina. The plant became known as the Poinsettia and December 12 was named National Poinsettia Day by Congress in memory of Poinsett after his death in 1851.

The colorful parts of the Poinsettia plant that appear to be flowers are actually cluster of “bracts,” or “modified leaves.” The flowers of the plant, or the “cyathia” varieties of Poinsettias are available with red, white and pink bracts clusters. Today there are more than 100 varieties of Poinsettias available, with red, white and pink bracts. Impress someone shopping for this holiday staple with your new vocab word - bracts!

There are more poinsettias sold in the U. S. during a brief six-week period around December 25 than the entire rest of the year. They have become a very popular symbol of the holidays, and no one wants to miss this special time to enjoy them.
